Ceramic Art in Rhodes...
Inspiring the artist in you
Rhodes seems to lend itself to inspire the artist in the locals and visitor alike.
We
have many artists passing through whether it be photographers or landscape
artists capturing the colours of the mountains in water colours or oils, through
to local fabric painters. Out of season, time seems to stand still, allowing
us time to create in whatever way inspires us here in Rhodes.
Jill’s Ceramic Inspirations
Jill Steynberg uses her spare time hand painting ceramics. Making the bisque-ware herself from molds, she hand paints, glazes and fires the goods at home and sells mainly through orders placed from passers-by.
Jill has had no training in ceramics or art, but has managed to teach herself the process of bisque-making and has been inspired by the natural surroundings in Rhodes of trout, herbs, flowers, insects and all forms of nature. The most popular seems to be the trout.
Jill paints a variety of items such as dinner services, pasta bowls, jugs, tiles, tea sets, vases and lamp bases. Each item is given individual attention with no two items ever alike.

Ed Herbst, fly-fisherman, T.V news reporter and editor of the “Piscator” visited Rhodes recently and published the following piece in the November 200 Piscator: “While Fred goes fishing, his wife Jill Steynberg paints and glazes the most beautiful pottery, much of it with a fly-fishing theme. A few years back I was pleasantly surprised to discover her work on sale in Rhodes and bought a couple of coffee mugs. Since then, well, she’s blossomed into a formidable talent. Her work is in demand around South Africa and in one or two overseas countries as well. I don’t want to say, “I told you so,” but two years ago that’s precisely what I thought would happen and one of the reasons I decided to get in early and invest in the mugs.”
